At the 2016 World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, experts discussed the impact of the Forth Industrial Revolution on the future of work. It was revealed that by 2020 more than a third of the desired core skill sets of most professions will be skills that are not yet considered important in today’s jobs. According to The Future of Jobs report, social skills, such as emotional intelligence, persuasion and teaching others, will be in higher demand across industries than narrow technical skills, such as programming or equipment operation and control.
According to five-time CEO Margaret Heffernan, today’s work culture evolves around “the Super-Chicken model” – picking, growing and allocating resources to the superstar employees. The results are dysfunction, aggression, and waste that suppress the productivity of the rest. To change that, we need to focus on building social capital. It is the glue that grows every time one team member asks another for help or during coffee-break conversations, and is absolutely critical to boosting productivity and growing momentum in your company. By 2040, a “career” will consist of thousands of short-term assignments spread over a lifetime base on a report published by the Roosevelt Institute and the Kauffman Foundation. Freelancers now make up 34% of the U.S. workforce and there seems to be no stopping the continuous shift towards entrepreneurship, independent contracting, and “peer-to-peer” work on platfoms like TaskRabbit, Uber, etc. This revolution is driving fundamental changes in laws, policies, and technology like never-before.
